How to apply and Selection Criteria
Old Flames Scholarship sponsored by ALCOA of Australia, Kwinana Alumina Refinery
Since 2018, ALCOA’s Kwinana Alumina Refinery provides dozens of scholarships for Year 11 and 12 students. They are meant to alleviate students’ school expenses, whether it’s for the Specialist Programs they are enrolled in or any General courses they undertake.
Scholarships are under the following categories:
- Year 11 Sustainability Scholarship ($500)
- Year 11 Creative Arts Scholarship ($500)
- Year 11 Hospitality Scholarship (VET) ($500)
- Year 11 Building & Construction Scholarship (VET) ($500)
- Dux Awards (2x $500) – doesn’t require application form
- Strathalmond Trophy (2x $250) – doesn’t require application form
Application Process
Applicants must complete the Application Form (attach this link to the underlined phrase: Gilmore College Scholarships 2022-23 (oldflames-edu.net.au)) and a Letter of Application in which they explain:
- why they should be awarded the scholarship
- how being awarded the scholarship would assist them
- their intended Senior School studies
- how they can make a positive contribution during their senior years at Gilmore College
- their ambitions for the future
They must also be aware of their responsibilities as an applicant, such as completing the application accurately and submit it on time, take responsibility for the documentation required for the application, check emails relating to scholarship process daily and reply to them within 24 hours of receipt, be on time and prepared for the interview.
Selection Criteria
When selecting the recipients, the panel will consider the following:
- the applicant’s ability to express him/herself clearly and concisely
- the applicant’s ability to demonstrate that he/she will provide a positive contribution during their senior years at Gilmore College
- scholarship specific achievement and ambitions
Terms and Conditions
Applicants must be:
- Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia within the meaning of the Australian Citizen Act 2007 (proof of either must be provided if requested)
- Currently residing in the State of Western Australia
- Completing Year 10, in the year of application, for Year 11 scholarships
- Enrolled or prepared to enrol and complete Years 11 and/or 12 at Gilmore College, following the awarding of the scholarship.

Kiah Rignall Memorial Scholarship – proudly supported by Kiah Rignall’s family and friends
Kiah Rignall was a much loved and respected teacher at Gilmore College who is sadly missed. Her passion for education and her support of the ‘underdog’ was widely recognised.
In 2021, Old Flames was approached by the Gilmore College Principal Rohan Smith and the dedicated family of teacher Kiah Rignall to assist them with their wish to have Kiah remembered by a memorial scholarship, proudly supported by Kiah’s friends and family.
Kiah Rignall Memorial Scholarship aims to be a continuation of Kiah’s commitment to mentoring those students who may otherwise get lost in the education system, without being able to achieve their full potential. The scholarship will be a pathway to future careers and opportunities and is not intended to be based on academic performance.
The scholarship is valued at up to $2.000 spread over Years 11 and 12.
Application Process

Rotary club of Kwinana/Rita and Andy Valk Foundation Scholarship
Rita and Andy Valk were both passionate about the Kwinana community and their Rotary Club. In 2021, Old Flames partnered with the Rotary Club of Kwinana and Rita and Andy Valk Foundation to award, each year, a scholarship to a student(s) who is/are resident(s) of the Town of Kwinana and who is/are attending an educational institution within the Town of Kwinana.
Scholarships are under the following categories:

LYRiK Scholarships Program – City of Kwinana

The Leadership, Youth and Respect in Kwinana Program offers twelve $1000 Scholarships to young people aged 15-24 years who live, work, or go to school in Kwinana, have an employment or an education goal they want to achieve and would benefit from mentoring.
Recipients will attend four fortnightly mentoring sessions in May/June at the Zone Youth Space. These sessions equip young people with financial, budgeting and goal setting skills, tailored to suit their needs and learn more about their field of interest.
Scholarships are offered under six different categories:
- Sports, Fitness and Health – for occupations such as personal trainer, nurse, sports instructor, coach or dietician
- Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Sustainability – for occupations such as engineer, software designer or lab technician.
- Community Services and Defence – for occupations such as youth worker, army officer, counsellor or fire fighter.
- Hospitality and Retail – for occupations such as barista, store manager, chef.
- Arts and Culture – for occupations such as film maker, painter, tourism operator, photographer or dancer
- Trades and Business – for occupations such as lawyer, plumber, electrician or hairdresser.
The Scholarships Program allocation is a six-month process comprised of different stages: applications, open in December of each year and close at the end of March; fortnightly mentoring sessions at the Zone Youth Space, throughout May and June; LYRiK Awards, for mentors and recipients.

Students in Year 7 enrolled at Gilmore College can receive an academic scholarship of $300 per student, granted by their former Primary Schools to cover secondary school expenses. The selection criteria are based upon the student’s High Academic Rigor.
