What We Do
Student Services at Gilmore College aims to assist students to:
- make the most of their opportunities.
- to support them in their personal development.
- help them achieve their life and learning goals.
Student Services has friendly, professional staff who can help students adjust to our learning environment. The College learning environment is characterised by teachers and students working cooperatively reflecting mutual respect, care, and support to attain the best possible learning outcomes for each student.
The Student Services Team is one structure which will support students in becoming more independent and self-managing. In addition, parents/caregivers may find some of the services reassuring and are welcome to access appropriate information. In accordance with relevant codes of professional practice student consultations are confidential.
Counselling
Counselling by an experienced Chaplain, Nurse and Psychologist can help students with:
- personal issues (relationships, family, anxiety).
- social and developmental issues (independence).
- study and lifestyle issues (confidence, motivation, stress management).
Information about community and interagency support services is also available.
Student Services Team
The role of the Student Services Team is to provide support to students and staff, and the promotion of a positive, caring College environment.
Associate Principal – Student Services
The Associate Principal has overall responsibility for leading and managing the Team, and the delivery of pastoral care programs within the College.
Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer
The AIEO position is confined to three general areas. These include:
Interactive Role
Direct contact and communication with the Aboriginal students and the College staff.
Liaison Role
Contact and communication with parents/caregivers of Aboriginal students, Aboriginal community groups and other agencies who can further the educational welfare of Aboriginal students.
Non-Interactive Role
Involves duties performed during non-contact time which benefit:
- the Aboriginal students and their families;
- the Aboriginal community; and
- the College environment as a whole.
College Chaplain
The College Chaplain supports the social, emotional, and mental well-being of the school community while demonstrating core values of respect, compassion, and service. Our chaplain is passionate about the well-being of our school community and helps by advocating for students on an individual case-by-case basis and equips students with strategies to overcome various situations, including (not limited to):
Bullying and conflict mediation, family issues, death and trauma, cyber safety, homelessness, mental health, crisis, sickness, peer pressure, drug and alcohol problems, domestic violence and abuse, school issues, disabilities, education and learning difficulties, attitude, and referrals to community agencies if needed.
College Nurse
The College Nurse is involved in health education, health promotion and early intervention. The position involves providing accurate information to enable students to make informed decisions about health care. In addition, the College Nurse seeks to support parents/caregivers in the care of adolescent children.
College Psychologist
The College Psychologist is appointed through the South Metropolitan Region Education Office to service Gilmore College. The position is responsible for assisting the College by promoting system initiatives and providing support and quality assurance to enhance outcomes.
College Youth Work
The College Youth Worker promotes the personal, educational, and social development of young people at Gilmore College.
Year Coordinator
The Year Coordinator offers a broad range of support in the area of pastoral care including attendance, behaviour management, and academic progress and provides a communication link between students, parents/caregivers and the College.
There are six Year Coordinator positions:
- Year 7 Coordinator
- Year 8 Coordinator
- Year 9 Coordinator
- Year 10 Coordinator
- Year 11 Coordinator
- Year 12 Coordinator
Year Manager
The position of Manager is responsible for the overall welfare of students in their respective Year group through the implementation of Pastoral Care programs. They work collaboratively with other members of the Student Services Team to provide an environment that nurtures the emotional, physical, and academic well-being of all students.
There are three Year Manager positions:
- Manager (Year 7)
- Manager (Years 8 & 9)
- Manager (Years 10 – 12)
Support Officer
The School Support Officer works collaboratively with the Student Services team to provide support to students and encourage positive engagement and achievement at school. The School Support Officer is one of the first points of contact students have when raising an enquiry, concern, or issue. Depending on the enquiry or issue, the Support Officer links the student to the appropriate member of the Student Services team.
Support Triage Officer
The Student Support Triage Officer fulfills another important customer service role with parents, carers and guardians, and determines the priority of student enquiries, in relation to social and mental health related matters. Triage Officer provides services regarding student management, provision and coordination of duty of care within the Student Services team, and Year Managers support.
