Robotics and Drone STEAM at Gilmore College

Overview

At Gilmore College, the Robotics and Drone STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) initiative provides a dynamic curriculum that immerses students in robotics and drone technology.

Beginning in lower school, Years 7 and 8 students are invited to join the after-school Gilmore STEAM Robotics Club. Here, they explore the fundamentals of robotics using platforms like Lego Spike Prime and Pycharm (Python). The program escalates in Year 9 with a semester-long class that dives deeper into advanced coding with C++ and Python alongside practical electronics design. The Year 10 curriculum introduces an innovative drone course focusing on block coding and Python for real-world industrial applications. This progression prepares students for further education, leading to qualifications such as the TAFE Certificate III in Aviation or university degrees in Mechatronics Engineering.

Achievements and Impact

Gilmore College’s Robotics Team has made significant strides in the FIRST Lego League competitions, consistently showcasing their superior problem-solving abilities and creativity.

A highlight of their journey includes a second-place finish in the Project Innovation Category at the 2023 Asia Pacific Open Championship for their “SolWin5” project, which proposed a novel renewable energy solution. This project received acclaim at the competition and gained substantial local endorsement. The team’s active participation and success in global competitions demonstrate the program’s role in developing essential skills and having a worldwide impact.
