Alumni – Old Flames

Introduction

Old Flames is the organisation of former students of Kwinana Senior High School and Gilmore College, encompassing former and current staff, students, and parents/caregivers. Established in 2018, Old Flames aims to support Gilmore College and its current students by fostering positive outcomes through various initiatives. These include establishing beneficial partnerships with the business and industrial sectors, and providing direct financial support to enhance student opportunities.

Old Flames is committed to advocating for Gilmore College and promoting its image positively. The organisation plays a vital role in fundraising and managing sponsorships through its Old Flames Scholarship and Awards Program. Funds are raised both through membership fees and special events such as Quiz Nights. Additionally, Old Flames hosts reunions and social gatherings to bring members together for enjoyable experiences.

Gilmore College Educational Scholarship Trust

Through the Gilmore College Educational Scholarship Trust, “Old Flames” created a Scholarship program, which is one of the Association’s greatest achievements. As well as receiving donations from Old Flames members, this aspect involves building relationships with local businesses and community institutions to provide the College with significant Sponsorship towards the funding of scholarships for students.

The Trust is registered with the Australian Charities and Not for Profits Commission and has Designated Gift Recipient Status with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), i.e. donations to the Trust are Tax deductible.

As Trustees, Old Flames administer scholarships such as the ALCOA, Rotary/Valk, and Kiah Rignall from the Trust’s funds. Gilmore College staff collaborate with Old Flames to manage applications and oversee the selection process.

Other Awards and Projects

  • Awards: In addition to the scholarship program, Old Flames supports various prestigious awards through fundraising and member donations, such as the ATAR and VET Dux Awards and the Strathalmond Trophy for the top athletes at Gilmore College.
  • Footpath Project: One notable project was the construction of a much-needed footpath on the school grounds. Led by Alumni member Sally Marchingo, this initiative involved community members, staff, and former students purchasing engraved bricks in their names. The footpath was officially opened by Kwinana Mayor Carol Adams on April 27th, 2023, in a ceremony with Old Flames President David Redpath and former Principal Dean Gurr.
  • Student Support: Old Flames also provides financial backing for student activities, including participation in national competitions in Volleyball and Robotics.

These efforts reflect Old Flames’ commitment to enhancing educational and extracurricular opportunities for students at Gilmore College.
