Student Services at Gilmore College aims to assist students to make the most of their opportunities, help them achieve their life and learning goals, and support them in their personal development.
Student Services has friendly, professional staff who can help students adjust to our learning environment. The College learning environment is characterised by teachers and students working cooperatively reflecting mutual respect, care, and support to attain the best possible learning outcomes for each student.
The Student Services Team is one structure which will support students in becoming more independent and self-managing. In addition, parents/caregivers may find some of the services reassuring and are welcome to access appropriate information. In accordance with relevant codes of professional practice, student consultations are confidential.
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an operational framework designed to enhance student engagement and maximise learning potential. At Gilmore College, we have developed a PBS Behaviour Matrix that clarifies key behaviour expectations across all school areas: communal, class, whole school and online. Expectations are explicitly taught in every classroom and consistently reinforced throughout the school. Gilmore College PBS adheres to the school’s SOAR Principles – Supportive, Organised, Aspirational and Resilient.
Good Standing
Integral to our PBS approach, the Good Standing Policy encourages students to strive for their best. This policy rewards students who meet and maintain specified standards for uniform, attendance, and behavior throughout each term. Students who uphold Good Standing are rewarded with special excursions.
Reward Excursions
At the end of each term, students who have upheld Good Standing are invited to participate in engaging and varied excursions. These rewards include both outdoor and indoor activities, such as river cruises, kayaking, bowling, laser tag, silent discos, and cinema outings. Our staff ensures that these excursions are both enjoyable and engaging, offering options that are tailored to various weather conditions and group sizes.
Student Support
Our dedicated Youth Workers, Chaplain, Nurse and School Psychologist provide personalised support to our students, addressing:
- Personal issues (relationships, family, anxiety).
- Social and developmental issues (independence).
- Study and lifestyle issues (confidence, motivation, stress management).
Additionally, our staff are trained in conflict resolution and mediation to effectively manage and resolve conflicts, improving outcomes for our students.
Facilitating additional support through external agencies
The Zone Youth Space
Located at Gilmore Avenue and Sulphur Road, The Zone is the City of Kwinana’s community centre for youths aged 12-18. It offers a safe space for students to “Drop-In” after school and engage with a range of activities like arts and crafts, table tennis, board games, and computer games. The Zone also supports Gilmore College students with youth clubs, workshops, holiday programs, case management, counselling referrals, and scholarships.
The Smith Family
The Smith Family, a national charity, generously supports Gilmore College students through various scholarships and two key programs: Work Inspirations (WI) and Exploring Educational Pathways (EEP).
The WI Program offers a two-day excursion to the engineering firm ARUP, providing students with valuable and inspiring workplace experience. The EEP Program includes a two-day visit to South Metro TAFE and Murdoch University, giving Year 10 students a taste of post-secondary education.
